Install DHCP Server Role

In this step, you’ll install the DHCP Server role on dc1 using Server Manager. This adds the DHCP service to Windows Server. Configuration comes later.

Before you start

  • You should already be logged into dc1 via RDP
  • You must be signed in as a local or domain administrator (you will be by default)

Step 1: Open Server Manager

  1. Log into dc1
  2. Server Manager should open automatically
  3. If not, open it from the Start Menu

Step 2: Start the Add Roles Wizard

  1. In Server Manager, click Manage (top-right)
  2. Select Add Roles and Features
  3. Click Next on the welcome screen

Step 3: Choose Installation Type

  1. Select Role-based or feature-based installation
  2. Click Next

Step 4: Select the Server

  1. Select Select a server from the server pool
  2. Ensure dc1 is highlighted
  3. Click Next

Step 5: Select the DHCP Server Role

  1. Check the box for DHCP Server
  2. When prompted, click Add Features
  3. Click Next

The management tools are required—accept the defaults.

Step 6: Confirm and Install

  1. Click Next through the remaining screens
  2. On the confirmation page, click Install
  3. Wait for the installation to complete

Step 7: Confirm Installation

  • In Server Manager, click Tools
  • You should now see DHCP listed
  • This confirms the role is installed

Important Note

At this point, DHCP is installed but not yet configured. In a real environment, DHCP will not hand out IP addresses until scopes are created.

Next Step

In the next step, you’ll configure DHCP scopes and options so clients can actually receive IP addresses.
